Rated 'S' for Spooky

A filmmaker, painter, and musician – what more could I want in an inspiration? Lynch’s expression of dream logic and the waking nightmare deeply interest me as subject matter and in the specific way he depicts it. Lyrically and from a storytelling perspective, I find a lot to work with when looking at his art or watching his films, and have been particularly inspired by Twin Peaks the tv show. Manifestations of evil creating a dichotomy with the wholesome mundanity of a sleepy town, the vibrancy of the colours, the stilted acting and odd behaviour of the denizens, the underlying sadness resting just below and hinted at in the soundtrack; all of this culminates in something exciting to me for songwriting. His paintings and printmaking suck you in just as much as his work for the screen, with strange and largely cruel vignettes exhibiting these very same themes. There has not yet been a Lynch work I have not been affected by, nor has there been one I have not found value in for my own practices.
