Silent Hill Series

It is hard to fully condense what makes the Silent Hill series so important to me as an artist and music maker, in particular the first four games in the series. Everything from the art to the sound design and overall experience playing the games has left a significant impression on me, but the soundtracks of Silent Hill 3 (2003) and Silent Hill 4 (2004) have definitely been a large influence on the project at hand. The composer, Akira Yamaoka, combines aspects of industrial, trip-hop, traditional Japanese music, choral chants, and 50’s surf-rock, amongst a wide variety of interesting sounds and samples he manipulates to give the world of Silent Hill its own identity. Songs feel like they occupy the recesses of the human psyche, they breathe, they inspire dread, comfort – and I want to capture some of that in my own music. As for the visual, the horror is visceral and always looming, but the games focus in on rust reds and crystalline blues to stand out in the grey fog that pervades the town it is set in. Silent Hill 3’s (2003) themes of the terror of teenage girlhood resonated with me growing up, and I aim to harken back to this in a way either through lyrics, aesthetics, or sonic choices.
